ABOUT

I am a freelance graphic designer with over 30 years experience, based in South East London. I design books, magazines and more besides, specialising in sports and photography. I have also worked as a co-publisher and author on projects such as the photobook This Sporting Life, which brings together the incredible work of photographer Gerry Cranham.

From 1988-98 I worked for When Saturday Comes football magazine during which period the title evolved from groundbreaking fanzine to half decent football magazine. Between 1998 and 2018 I was WSC’s freelance art editor and compiled the magazine’s photography and archive photography features. I also set up the WSC Photography archive, which you can read about here.

Since 1999 I have also been producing illustrated books, packaging for the music industry and marketing material. I was series designer for the specialist sports heritage publishers Played in Britain, edited by Simon Inglis, from 2004-2014. I have been designing books for specialist independent publishers Vision Sports Publishing – whose clients include Tottenham Hotspur, Surrey County Cricket Club and England Rugby – since 2008.

Going back to the early 2000s, I worked with creative genius Mike Alway, designing sleeves for él records re-issues, Alan McGee’s Poptones label, Cherry Red and others. We once produced a limited edition, white vinyl 7" of an Orson Welles speech boxed with a Cuban cigar. When that’s on your CV you can die a happy man.

Feel free to look round and get in touch. You can also listen to me rambling on about WSC, DIY fanzine culture and other loosely related matters here.

c1990 – In the When Saturday Comes magazine offices in Farringdon, with Bill Brewster, John Duncan and co-founder Andy Lyons. An idyllic scene, though I appear to be gripping a scalpel in what could be seen as a mildly threatening fashion
